Nike Co-Founder Phil Knight Gives $400 Million to Stanford University
Nike co-founder and chairman Phil Knight is donating $400 million to a scholarship program at Stanford University.
Knight graduated from Stanford with an MBA in 1962 and is now worth $25.7 billion, according to Forbes. He is teaming up with the college’s outgoing president, John L. Hennessy, for the Knight-Hennessy Scholars Program, Stanford announced Tuesday.
His gift is the largest from any individual to Stanford, surpassing the $100 million given by website investor Robert King and his wife, Dorothy, in 2011.
It matches the largest sum ever given to Harvard: $400 million from Wall Street hedge fund billionaire John Paulson last year.
With a total endowment of $750 million, the Stanford program will be the largest fully-endowed scholarship program in the world, according to the college.
“John and I dream of a future 20, 30 or 50 years from now, when thousands of graduates — who can think outside the box as skilled problem-solvers — will be working together for a more peaceful, habitable world,” Knight said in a statement from Stanford.
The scholarship will accept 100 “high-achieving students … from a wide range of backgrounds and nationalities” each year, allowing them to pursue graduate, masters or doctorate degrees, or “professional programs … designed to develop scholars’ capacity to lead ambitious change in a complex world. 1 deputy dead, 2 injured in Colorado shooting
A suspect opened fire Wednesday on three members of the Park County Sheriff’s Office in Colorado, killing one and injuring two, authorities said.
The shooting occurred as the deputies were attempting to serve an eviction notice, Susan Medina, spokeswoman for the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, told reporters.
One deputy was killed.
One of the deputies is believed to have life-threatening injuries, Medina said. The third officer’s injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
“It is a dark day, and he would ask for prayers and thoughts, and just focusing everything you have on support of the Park County Sheriff’s Office,” the spokeswoman said of the sheriff.
The suspect was not identified. The status of the shooter was not immediately clear.
Medina did say: “There’s no risk to the community at this point.” (CNN)
Trump Grabs His First Congressional Endorsement
Rep. Chris Collins, R-N.Y., became the first member of Congress to publicly endorse Donald Trump for president. In a statement, Collins said the business tycoon has the “guts and the fortitude” for the Oval Office.
Like Trump, Collins is a successful businessman — he is one of the wealthiest members of Congress — and shares Trump’s view that the government needs to be run more like a business.
Collins had been a public supporter of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, but Bush exited the race after his disappointing finish in the South Carolina primary over the weekend.
Trump remains at the bottom of the pack when it comes to congressional endorsements. The leader is Florida Sen. Marco Rubio.
Historically, congressional endorsements have been one of the best indicators of the eventual nominee.
But the 2016 presidential race continues to test old conventions of how campaigns are won.
For instance, Bush had been the leader among congressional endorsements until he dropped out of the race.
According to a report in Politico, Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., will also back Trump.
“We don’t need a policy wonk as president. We need a leader as president,” Hunter told Politico, “I’m in, and I’ve been in.”
A spokesman for Hunter did not immediately return a request for comment on his endorsement.
2 KILLED, 5 HURT IN CRASH ON WB 210 FWY IN GLENDORA
Two people were killed and two others critically injured Wednesday morning in a multi-car collision on the westbound 210 Freeway in Glendora, California Highway Patrol officials said. At least three others suffered minor injuries.
The incident was reported near Lone Hill Avenue around 9:40 a.m., the CHP said. Four people were transported to a local hospital.
All but one westbound lane was closed in the area, backing up traffic. As of 12:15 p.m., the carpool and two left lanes remained closed.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. (ABC)
