Former Patient Sentenced to 7 Years in Prison for Repeatedly Punching 91-Year-Old Hospital Roommate

WESTMINSTER, Calif. –A former patient was sentenced yesterday to seven years in state prison for repeatedly punching his 91-year-old hospital roommate in the face. Ibrahim Yousef Battat, 36, Laguna Niguel, pleaded guilty to one felony count of inflicting injury on elder adult with a sentencing enhancement for causing great bodily injury on an elder. The defendant was also ordered to pay restitution to the victim.

At the time of the crime, Battat and the victim were patients and roommates at Fountain Valley Regional Medical Center (FVRMC). At approximately 3:40 a.m. on June 4, 2014, Battat attacked 91-year-old John Doe by using his hands to cover the victim’s nose and mouth. The defendant repeatedly punched John Doe and caused him to suffer a dislocated finger, major cuts to his head and hand, and eye swelling. Battat beat the victim until nurses and a patient in the next room arrived to restrain the defendant.

FVRMC staff restrained Battat until Fountain Valley Police Department (FVPD) arrived and arrested him
