Chen, born in Taiwan, immigrated to the United States in 1980s, and received a bachelor and master degree in music from the Juilliard School in New York.

Since her early childhood, Chen has demonstrated her talent in playing piano, and has been a laureate in numerous international competitions, including Tschaikovsky International Piano Competition in 1990, Prokofieff International Piano Competition in 1992, and International Web Concert Audition Competition in 1999.

“It is the first time for a Taiwanese orchestra to perform at Walt Disney Concert Hall,” said Chen in a press conference in Pasadena on May 8.  “Tyzen Hsiao was my neighbor when my family moved to the United States.  I am familiar with nearly all of his piano works.”

Tyzen Hsiao, a Taiwanese composer, pianist and conductor, dedicated all his life to integrate local music into the Western music.  His works earned him an international reputation as Taiwan’s Rachmaninoff.
