City of Irvine Recognized for Having One of the Best Geographic Information System Programs in North America through the 2022 Geospatial Maturity Index Survey

IRVINE: The City of Irvine has been recognized as having one of the best Geographic Information System (GIS) programs in North America, according to the 2022 Geospatial Maturity Index survey released earlier this month by PSD Citywide. The City tied for third place with a score of 95.6% in the 2022 Geospatial Maturity Index Report, which evaluated organizations in the United States and Canada.

PSD Citywide empowers governments of all sizes with infrastructure asset management, budgeting, and GIS solutions through their web-based software. PSD created the Geospatial Maturity Index (GMI) in 2018 to assist with GIS program development, capacity building, and innovation in public sector organizations.

The 2022 Geospatial Maturity Index (GMI) is the fourth year that PSD Citywide has published its benchmarking study for GIS programs. The GMI survey is a tool for public sector organizations to measure the maturity of their GIS (geographic information system) programs and serves as a resource to guide participants in advancing their programs.

“Irvine’s GIS staff go above and beyond when it comes to enhancing the quality of life for residents,” said Mayor Farrah N. Khan. “They provide maps of City parks, road construction and capital improvement projects, evacuation areas during an emergency, and have even gone out of their way to help a resident who was having trouble receiving deliveries because her home was not correctly located in Google Maps. They truly embody the We Are Irvine spirit.”

A total of 97 government organizations completed the 2022 GMI survey that asked questions in three competency categories: readiness, implementation, and impact. GMI 2022’s results yielded the most diverse Top 25 Ranking results to date. Overall, six provinces and five states are among the top performing GIS programs. United States GMI participation skyrocketed from only six participants in 2020 to 25 participants in 2022, taking up nine spots in the Top 25 list.
