AAPI Story : “Experience Love, Any kind of Love , Just Experience It”

Jayce Hung Cheung was born on July 1st, 1991 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. His ancestors were overseas Chinese who lived in Cho Lon District, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The Cheungs immigrated to Los Angeles, CA in November of 2009.

He became a strong patriot of his new country after seeing what had happened to the Twin Towers on 9/11/2001. At age 19, Jayce, decided to join the United States Army and later was stationed at the 82nd Airborne Division. This elite fighting force often send troops ascending from the skies anywhere in the world within 18 hours’ notice.

Jayce went to Basic Training in Oklahoma and later transferred to Georgia for his Advanced Individual Training. Cheung worked as a communications specialist. Private Cheung was responsible for all communications including telephones, signals, radios, etc. He was deployed to Baghdad, Iraq from June 2011 to June 2012 for Operation Enduring Freedom.

During the tour of Iraq his unit were under constant mortar attacks. “Yeah my base was hit daily, day and night, we just got used to it” proclaimed the soldier.  He also volunteered to be a paratrooper. “Jumping off airplanes with over 90 pounds of military gear. I don’t want to be a lag” jokingly replied PFC, Private First Class, Cheung. “I just want to be able to jump off planes, Airborne all the way”.

He was honorably discharged in the fall of 2013 due to his leg and knee injuries from Airborne School.  From 2013 to 2015, Jayce went to Moore Park Community College. Afterward he went to Pasadena City College in 2017. Jayce is currently studying at California Polytechnic Pomona as a social work major. He will be graduating in June 2024.

This young veteran is single and is willing to mingle. “I want to go to Vietnam, and perhaps meet a beautiful Vietnamese lady, marry her, and have kids” cheerfully said Cheung. He is known for his chill personality and wants to understand mankind at a profound level.
