City of Lake Forest Proclaims May as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.

Under the proposal of the first Asian and Chinese city councilmember Benjamin Yu, the city of Lake Forest declared May as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. It is the city’s first official proclamation of Asian Pacific American culture.

Yu proposed a motion to designate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month at the City Council Tuesday, and received unanimous support from the City Council including Mayor Doug Cirbo, Mayor Pro Tem Mark Tettemer, council Member Robert Pequeño and Scott Voigts.

Yu stated, “The State of California has a large and diverse population of Asian heritage and cultures. Collectively, we served and contributed significantly to our communities, state, and this great country. including the immigrants who came from the same land as me, 150 years ago to build the railroad and laid the foundation of growth and prosperity for our golden state.”

Benjamin Yu is the first Asian and Chinese city councilmember of Lake Forest .

Yu emphasized, “I’m a proud American of Asian heritage and I know many city residents share the same. With this proclamation, I’m very excited we officially celebrate Asian American heritage in the city of lake forest for the first time.”

In recent years, Lake Forest has been one of the cities with the fastest-growing Asian-Pacific population in Orange County. According to 2020 census, the city population is nearly 90,000 with 63.3% White, 23.2% Hispanic or Latino, 18.1% Asian and 2.2% African American.
