LOS ANGELES– The arts has become a top priority for Supervisor Hilda Solis who today, advocated for her motion calling for a one-percent requirement from private developers. Revenue from the new requirement is set for arts services and the creation of art for residents of the unincorporated areas of the County.
“What we aim to do is address cultural equity and inclusion by providing much needed funding for cultural services in unincorporated areas,” said Supervisor Solis. “We have 31 cities within the County with already established ordinances requiring these fees or incorporate artwork into commercial projects. It’s all about taking an extra step to ensure the arts reaches everyone.”
Currently, the County operates on the Civic Art Policy requiring a one-percent fee for civic art only in County funded public building projects. Today’s motion will mirror that same requirement for developers throughout the unincorporated areas of the County. This private developer requirement could potentially generate an estimated $8.2 million for arts programming.
Supervisor Solis has taken a strong stance on promoting the arts. This is just one of the many motions she has spearheaded to create arts equity throughout the County. In 2015, the Board of Supervisors passed a motion directing the County Arts Commission to establish an advisory group of diverse arts leaders.
