Washington, D.C. – The President and CEO of the United States-Mexico Chamber of Commerce (USMCOC) released the following statement on the recently announced “White House Emergency Measures to Address the Border Crisis”.
“There is no question that both countries are facing an unprecedented challenge with the arrival of asylum-seeker caravans; however, the mechanisms and policies to address this situation should be comprehensive solutions, that take into consideration security needs, as well as the humanitarian relief under which asylum principles are established.
The economies of both countries will be negatively impacted by the raise of tariffs, creating additional strains to an already complex situation; furthermore, these measures will not solve the border problems.
The United States-Mexico Chamber of Commerce calls for dialogue, and stands ready to contribute and assist our countries in overcoming the current challenges posed to trade and investment. The Chamber strongly believes in free trade, and in fact at our Annual Meeting celebrated on May 29 in Washington, D.C., the Board of Directors expressed its support to the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement, and the commitment to work diligently to support its passage by the United States Congress in the coming weeks.
We believe that the U.S. and Mexico are stronger when facing common challenges together and the USMCOC will always promote understanding and team work based on the good neighbor spirit”.
